Prof Ian Anderson supplied the obituary below to the New Phytologist and wished to remind all who knew Prof Cairney, or knew of him, that;
'John has made an outstanding contribution to fungal biology/ecology during his career and he has been a dedicated Associate editor for Fungal Biology (2010-present), editorial board member for Fungal Ecology (2007-present) as well as being an editor for the former journal Mycological Research (2002-2010). He was also a long running member of the editorial advisory board for New Phytologist with much of his research focussed towards mycorrhizal symbioses'.
